pnghack is a JavaScript solution for using transparent PNG images in Internet Explorer 6 (IE6). If you are using Prototype, you just need to copy and paste a few lines of code into your site to be able to use this.

When used on img elements, the pngHack method requires that the img tags are given 'dimension'. What this means is that they must have a width and a height. This can be done with CSS or by writing the width and height HTML attributes to the page. When used on other elements, like divs, at least one dimension must be specified for the hack to work.

Main Features:

- Dependent on "Prototype JavaScript framework (1.6.0)
- Works on img elements and on background images of elements
- PNG's can be used as backgrounds. However, image tiling will not work
- Safe to use - You don't have to make an exception or write separate code for IE6
- Background PNG's used in :hover's might need another application of the method
