Description:
J-Ben is a Japanese study program.
J-Ben is software for studying Japanese, especially "kanji",
which are the Chinese characters used when writing Japanese. It
should be an excellent study aid for people studying for the
Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT), but can no doubt assist
anyone studying Japanese who is trying to master how to read and
write kanji.
J-Ben is FREE SOFTWARE and is released under the GNU General
Public License version 2. (Its dictionary files are under separate
licenses.) In a nutshell: you're free to copy and distribute this
program freely. If you want to make changes to the software package
though, read the licenses since restrictions do apply.
J-Ben is designed to work on Windows 2000 or later (with East
Asian font support installed), as well as most modern Linux
distributions. It has been tested directly using Windows XP
Professional and Debian GNU/Linux "Sid".
What does it do?
J-Ben functions as a basic kanji dictionary: copy/paste or type
one or more kanji into the program, and the program will give you
information about all of the kanji it finds. This information
includes the different readings of the kanji, the English meanings,
stroke count, Jouyou grade levels, dictionary cross-reference
codes, and much more. This information is supplied by the KANJIDIC
dictionary file from Monash University.
J-Ben also lets you define a list of Kanji to study. It can
read in Kanji from a text file, or it can query the KANJIDIC
dictionary and add kanji based on newspaper frequency ranking or by
Jouyou grade level. You can also sort added-in kanji by grade level
or newspaper frequency allowing you to spend more of your time
studying kanji of higher importance to your studies. You can also
easily thumb through kanji in your study list in the dictionary,
too!
Finally, J-Ben features a kanji flash card mode. Choose how
many kanji you want to study, choose whether you want them chosen
randomly from your list or from a specific point in your list, and
choose whether you want to do reading or writing practice. J-Ben
will then drill you through the kanji you've selected. It will
track which kanji you mark as wrong, run you through the kanji you
missed until you get them right, and at the end will print a
percentage score and a list of kanji which you marked as wrong.
In the future: I plan to add English-Japanese, Japanese-English
dictionary capabilities. Also planned are a vocab flash card mode,
and an addition to the kanji dictionary tab where it'll also tell
you commonly used words which use the kanji you searched for.
What dictionaries are available?
J-Ben is powered by the publicly available free dictionary
files EDICT and KANJIDIC, from Monash University.
EDICT is a general purpose Japanese-English dictionary which
can be searched both to and from Japanese. (Currently EDICT support
is not implemented.)
KANJIDIC contains extensive information about kanji characters.
This includes Jouyou grade levels (the grades in which Japanese
students learn the kanji), frequency rankings for the top 2501
characters (based upon analysis of the Mainichi Shimbun over 4
years), stroke count, dictionary reference codes, and other
information.
What's New in This Release:
· The makefile was changed to support "make install"
and to better handle intermediate build files.
· Linux builds now follow the File Hierarchy
Standard.
· The software now uses libiconv for handling charset
conversions.
· All wxWidgets-specific code has been removed from
non-GUI classes with the exception of the error log.
· A DocBook manual has been written and is now on the
project Web site.
