TuxGuitar is a full featured tablature editor, composer and player. Similar functionalities and even file formats make this a brilliant alternative to the popular Guitar Pro application. Built in Java, TuxGuitar is a cross-platform utility successfully running in Linux, Windows or Mac machines.
With an intuitive interface, TuxGuitar provides support for multi-instrument playback, manage note duration, add bend, vibrato, hammer-on, pull-off effects. The utility has an inbuilt tuner as well as a chord editor. Markers can be added and tempo can be changed at any time. TuxGuitar can help you transpose one or all the measure of the track while even keeping notes on the same string.
A fretboard is available for either the left of right handed that shows all the notes and chords as they are being played. TuxGuitar also features a bundle of scales including some of the most popular like major, pentatonic, blues, minor, chromatic.
The utility has its own file format TG but can work perfectly with Guitar Pro files like GP3, GP4, GP5, or MIDI, and TAB. Export is available in multiple extensions including PDF, MIDI, ASCII.
