Rumpus is a professional grade FTP server.
The application comes as a daemon that runs in the background, and
a Control Window which changes the preferences of the FTP server.
Even though the application uses a graphical user interface, the
provided features are solid, and the server is very flexible
regarding its configuration.
The interface is structured in tabs. Each of these tabs provides a
specific functionality. These tabs are: 'Stats', 'Activity',
'Logs', 'Setup', and 'Management'. 'Setup' and
'Management' are a little bit more complex, so I am going to say
a few things about them.
The 'Setup' tab allows you to: install the server daemon, define
the users of the FTP server, modify the settings of the server,
access the upload center, set up folders, and you can also enable
an encrypted connection via SSL. The SSL functionality is provided
by an Open Source SSL wrapper, 'Stunnel', which comes with the
distribution package.
The 'Management' tab allows you to: view the active users, block
certain FTP clients, manage the network setup, edit or define the
list of accepted file types based on the file mime type, preview
the diagnostics of the server, do a backup of the server settings
and you can also restore the settings from an existing backup. From
this tab you can also enable the remote administration feature with
the Rumpus Controller, and you can do the software updates.
Pluses: various options, great flexibility,
graphical administration, remote administration support, support
for encrypted connections.
Drawbacks / flaws:
In conclusion: the price of this piece of software
might look a little bit high, but with this feature set, the
application is not expensive at all since it's a solution that
works best for professional FTP hosting.
