Updated : added support for processing SQL-type string
constants, recognizes multiple same-line statements with ":"
character, log file creation to monitor program with variable dump,
reoptimization of byte overhead per variable during symbol
assignment(name-length vs frequency-of-usage to max out size
reduction), recognizes double-quoted apostrophes (remark
characters), optimization for variable-symbol sort routine (bit
faster), status logs are more informative.
Here is an alternative for eVB 3.0 (Microsoft Embedded Visual
Basic 3.0) developers who wish to reduce the size (footprint) of
their applications.
eVB developers quickly find out that eVB does NOT get rid of
deadweight code: Remarks and excess formatting codes are left
behind and furthermore, rather than assigning proper symbols to
program variables, the compiler compiles the ACTUAL variable names
into the final code.
This program (installed on your desktop) will take your eVB code
files and wring almost every iota of wasted space from it. It has a
two-pass approach: First, it gets rid of all remarks and useless
whitespace, even from the form definition section of your eVB
files. Then it analyzes your declared variables and replaces them
with assigned symbols (which are shorter and more compact). The
results are NOT pretty (when you reload them into the IDE) but
consider the benefits: After this super-compression, your files are
now 40-60% smaller! And would probably run faster to boot! All you
have do it compile the adjusted code and deploy your software.
This program will NOT change your original code. The new,
adjusted version will be mirrored in a directory of your
choice.
A DEMO version is provided. However, it will only reduce up
to the first 100,000 characters and replace the 25 longest
variables with their symbolic equivalents. Useable for small
programs, it also provides a projected estimate of the actual size
reduction if you use the full version so that you can see whether
this program will be useful to you.
