Phishing, also known as email fraud or forgery, attempts to collect information from you that could be used for identity theft or other scams. It asks you to respond with sensitive information such as your social security number, credit card number, and so on.
Spam and phishing both come from sources with whom you have no prior relationship and from whom you have not requested information. They may also claim to come from merchants you're familiar with—but the information in the message doesn't match those merchants.
