Description:
Safari is the name of the web browser produced by Apple, now available for Windows. If you're a Windows user, think of Safari as the Internet Explorer of Mac systems.
Some additional services such as 'Bonjour' may be installed too once you've download Safari, from the same package.
For those who never touched or seen a Mac before, taking the first look at Safari's interface may produce a bit of a surprise. Safari looks like a Mac program. But... were you expecting something else? Anyway, the interface is really simple and easy-to-use, so don't get way too anxious about it. The really nasty part is that there's no skins for it, yet. So you have to get used to its interface, anyway. At least so far.
Right on the interface you may find quick links to bookmarks, with some default links already included - Apple, Youtube, Google Maps, Yahoo! and other popular sites (Amazon, eBay, FlickR, etc). Right clicking there enables you to add a new bookmarks folder. In few words, this is quite a nice feature, but that's just bookmarks after all, any other popular browser comes with that too.
RSS feeds and tabbed browsing are also supported, while the default toolbar elements are limited to the typical 'Back', 'Forward', 'Refresh' and 'Stop' buttons. You may also see the loading status of a page in a progress bar.
The toolbar is customizable and a Google search box is provided right on the toolbar. You may also choose to hide/show the toolbar, the bookmark bar or the status bar. Viewing the source code of the currently loaded page or making the text font bigger/smaller are other options available in the 'View' menu.
There are some other options that are anyway pretty much typical to any other web browser nowadays (pop-up blocking, autofilling form, quick empty cache, etc.)
One interesting feature is the 'Private Browsing', a surfing mode that, once enabled, will make the browser not store most of the information that is usually stored when you're surfing the net. Webpages will not be added to history, AutoFill will not save any information, items will be automatically removed from the 'Downloads' window, and so on.
The 'Preferences' window enables you to change most of the Safari's basic settings. There aren't too many advanced settings though.
The context menu available when you right click a page in Safari brought up really few options - back, reload, view source, save page or print page. Right-clicking a word enables you to query it for a quick Google search. Right-clicking an image doesn't provide too many options neither.
As a good fact, Safari comes with some default plugins (QuickTime, Shockwave Flash, etc)
Safari is not yet 'world's best browser', at least not on Windows, but there is surely some hope. The improvements the next versions will have will tell if the hope was not in vain.
