The file system fragmentation is a common issue for all computer users. Its apparition does not allow the optimal usage of the hard disk and also decreases the performance of the operating system corresponding to a higher level of fragmentation. The defragmentation process is meant to improve the data structure on the hard drive by repairing the individual files or free space fragmentation.

Most of the existing defragmentation software offer to the user the possibility to perform actions for an entire hard drive or partition. If you do not need to defragment an entire hard disk volume or partition, the free Windows application FragExt allows the defragmentation of individual files.

The current version of FragExt is not suitable to defragment all files existing on a hard drive, because the defragmentation algorithm does not include the analysis of relationships between various files when they are re-arranged.

FragExt software is easy to install and use. In the same time the memory footprint is very low. The automatic installer allows you to select the application setup type (typical, custom or complete). In the context menu, there will be placed a convenient entry for FragExt application launch in case of individual files. By selecting the Properties of a certain file, by clicking the fragments tab, the user get all fragment details, such as size, percent of the file, number of clusters and more.

FragExt software allows the saving of defragmentation reports, having simple reporting features. On the author homepage, there is available for free download the source code of a customizable defragmentation engine that can be used for building other similar utilities. The binary distribution of FragExt software can also be downloaded for free.
