Windows Live Writer is a Windows based application having similar functionalities with a word processor that allows bloggers to publish rich content like photos, videos, maps and more directly from the desktop. If you already have a blog hosted on Windows Live Spaces, SharePoint, Wordpress, Blogger, LiveJournal, TypePad, or other blog service, Windows Live Writer is able to automatically connect to it.

If you do not have a blog, the application allows you to create one for free with Windows Live Spaces. For an existing blog, a connection wizard will require the URL of the blog and respectively, the administrator user name and password. After the validation of the required data, the next Window will provide a desktop based interface for your blog.

The posts can be created in a WYSIWYG manner because Windows Live Writer will automatically detect the blog theme and as a consequence the preview will be available during the post editing process. In the same time, the user is able to switch the view to Web Preview (a live preview of the post) or to HTML Code mode, when the HTML source of the post become editable.

The user can easily insert images and videos into a post by using the corresponding menu buttons. If a connection to the Internet is not available, the user has the option to create a post off-line and then publish it online.

Microsoft Windows XP SP2 (with Microsoft .NET Framework) or Windows Vista is required to run Windows Live Writer. In case of Windows XP, if a message notifies you about the absence of Windows Update Agent 5.8.02469 when run the installer, it is caused by the fact that the Windows Automatic update is turned off. In order to update the Windows Update Agent, is enough to visit the Microsoft Update Website.

By providing useful blog posts editing and publishing features, Windows Live Writer will improve the work flow both for beginners as well as advanced users. The default features can be extended by installing various plugins available for free download.
