Fedora 10 Provides An Improved Boot Speed and New Virtualization Features

Fedora, an open source Linux distribution sponsored by Red Hat, is a complete general purpose platform featuring leading-edge technologies. Having tenth releases in five years, the latest version of Fedora (Fedora 10) was released on 25 of November 2008.

About the new Fedora 10 release, Paul Frields, Fedora project leader at Red Hat stated: “With the release of Fedora 10, the Fedora Project continues its tradition of innovation and community. Fedora sets the standards for technical features that are relevant to everyone from desktop users to the business enterprise, and advance free software worldwide.”

Fedora 10 comes with many improvements of the virtualization features, a new graphical boot system (Plymouth) that has the role to decrease the time needed for the boot process, better hardware support for many types of webcams, optimized tools for printers setup and more. The desktop productivity is maximized through the introduction of GNOME 2.24.1 and OpenOffice.org 3.0.

The new virtualization enhancements include: unified Kernel image, virtualization storage management and remote installation of virtual machines. As a consequence, virtual machines hosts and guests will be easier to administrate. The NetworkManager connection sharing will allow users having a wireless connection to share it with others, in this way enabling the possibility of instant collaboration anywhere.

On the other hand, various software applications existing in the previous versions of Fedora were improved. Existing since Fedora 9 was released, the software management tool PackageKit was extended to be able to perform on-demand installation of codecs.

Regarding the security enhancements, Fedora 10 includes a new toolkit for security audit and intrusion detection, SecTool. In the same time, programmers will be capable to build more secure applications with the new set of Python bindings.

If you want to test or use the new Fedora 10 desktop edition, it is available as a live CD with GNOME or KDE desktop. Also for users that want to upgrade an older Fedora version, a DVD ISO can be downloaded from the Fedora Project official website.
