Automatic Creation of An Ubuntu 8.1 Live USB From Windows

As compared with the running of a LiveCD inside a virtual machine, the deployment of an operating system from a bootable USB drive (Live USB) offers the user the possibility to install software permanently on the USB as well as to save the system settings.

There are many methods of creation of Live USB containing various Linux distributions. The manual setup of a Live USB from an existing LiveCD ISO could be a difficult task for a beginner.

Fedora Live USB Creator is a cross platform (compatible with Windows and Linux) utility that automates the process of setting up a Live USB from an existing LiveCD ISO.It provides a non-destructive method of installation of the operating system because the user does not have to format or partition the USB drive.

If you need to make an Ubuntu 8.1 Live USB from Windows, first the Fedora Live USB Creator distribution archive must be downloaded. The application does not require an installation on your hard drive and can be started by double clicking the icon corresponding to the executable file contained inside the distribution archive.

The Fedora Live USB Creator will automatically detect the removable devices available, as a consequence you will have to select the desired one as a target device from a drop-down menu existing in the application user interface.

After the download of the Ubuntu 8.1 LiveCD ISO image is complete, you must click the Browse button (situated in the upper left of the main application window) to specify its location on the hard drive and then click Create Live USB button. In the final step, an SHA1 checksum verification is automatically performed.

The Fedora Live USB Creator also allows the automatic setup of the Fedora Linux Distribution on a Live USB. The users wanting to deploy Fedora, Ubuntu 8.1 or other Linux distribution as LiveCD directly in Windows could not have the same flexibility in saving operating system settings or to make permanent software installations.
