The Distribution of PHP / MySQL Applications With Server2Go
Server2Go is a Windows based software that allows the distribution of any PHP / MySQL application on a CD-ROM or an USB stick. Being portable, it does not require to the user to perform an installation operation. Practically, Server2Go provides the possibility of direct implementation on any hard drive of a full featured testing environment composed of Apache, PHP, Perl, MySQL, SQLite.
When a user wants to present a standalone PHP / MySQL application on a Windows operating system, this server software runs automatically when the computer detects the CD-ROM or USB containing it. According to a certain situation, Server2Go will automatically configure Apache, PHP and MySQL, such as the autodetection of free ports for Apache and MySQL (the autodetection of proxy settings is also performed).
Based on the autodetected host name and port, Server2Go will open a browser window with the PHP application automatically started. During the server start-up a customizable splash screen with a progress bar will appear.
The file pms_config allows the modification of configuration settings for the splash screen, tray icon, default web browser used by Server2Go, host name and more. For example, is possible to setup a portable browser (external for the operating system) existing on the CD-ROM to work with Server2Go.
Server2Go comes with support for applications compatible with PHP 5.2.x (multiple extensions are installed and enabled by default) and MySQL version 5. In order to install a PHP based application or a script capable to run automatically in the opened web browser window on server startup, its index file must be situated in the root of htdocs directory. MySQL databases management can be performed with the help of phpMyAdmin application, included with Server2Go.
