Google Friend Connect Beta Enables The Building Of New Social Networks
Announced from May 2008, Google Friend Connect service is now available to all webmasters as beta version. This web based service will practically allow the creation of social networks into any website.
Even there are many existing social networking applications that could be easily deployed on any operating system platform, Google Friend Connect simplifies the addition of social networking features to a web page or an entire website by eliminating the need of writing complex code.
In order to implement Google Friend Connect into an existing website, first, you must provide the valid URL of the home page and the site name as it will be shown to the visitors when they want to modify Friend Connect settings. Then, two files are automatically generated and they must be uploaded in the root directory corresponding to the home page URL.
Basic social networking features can be introduced by using ready made gadgets. The user is able to customize the gadget size and color of text, links and background. The gadget HTML code will be automatically generated and must be copied and pasted into the desired area (delimited by an appropriate container) of the web page.
Google Friend Connect provides different types of gadgets to choose from. For example, Members gadget allows visitors to join to a website only by providing the login details of an existing Google, Yahoo or OpenID account. Other gadgets permit visitors to make new friends, share links and media, play games and more.
Google Friend Connect service can improve the traffic and page views because users are able to send invitations to their existing friends from other social networks or email contacts lists in order to join to a particular website network. In the same time, webmasters could attract more users by building unique gadgets based on OpenSocial API.
