WordPress 2.7 “Coltrane” Is Here: The Last Manual Upgrade
After the release date was pushed back a month, a new stable version (2.7) of the most popular PHP / MySQL blogging platform is available: WordPress 2.7 “Coltrane” was launched based on a notable implication of the community – over 150 people have submitted source code.
The release of WordPress 2.7 “Coltrane” is mainly characterized by a major redesign of the Dashboard and implementation of new features which permits the execution of various blogging tasks more efficiently as compared with the previous WordPress versions.
The installation procedure of the WordPress platform is not changed, but when the user login into the administration area will notice the new interface of the Dashboard that provides a drag-and-drop type functionality for moving and rearranging various elements around the page and minimizes the number of clicks determining a faster finalization of certain operations.
In this way, the most frequently used tools can be placed in the desired location of the page therefore the custom administration interface will improve the work flow.
Menus can be toggled between minimal and full size if more free space is needed in the main window. Even more, from the Screen Options menu, certain page elements are customizable: for every new window the user has the possibility to show or hide menus by checking or unchecking the corresponding checkbox.
Other new features available in WordPress 2.7 “Coltrane” are: one click automatic plugin installer, QuickPress, the capability of comments editing directly from Dashboard and many more. Regarding the performance improvements, WordPress 2.7 has support for Gears determining the reduction of page loading time because images, scripts and CSS files will be stored on the local computer.
The automatic upgrade functionality of WordPress 2.7 platform is maybe the most waited feature. Starting from this version, the user will no longer be forced to manually upgrade WordPress due to the built-in upgrade utility that will detect the existence of a newer version and will perform the download and upgrade action based on a single mouse click.
