The Screenshot Tour Of openSUSE 11.1 in VirtualBox And VMware On Windows Desktop

With the help of virtualization technique is possible to run a certain operating system (guest) on top of a Windows desktop. In this article will be shown the methods of deployment of openSUSE 11.1 Live CD ISO image containing the KDE desktop in VirtualBox and VMware Player.

The complete description of the Linux distributions testing in Windows with virtual machines in VMware Player is available in the related article: Fedora 10 Inside Windows: Screenshots Tour.

In order to deploy the openSUSE 11.1 KDE 4.1 Live CD ISO image with VMware player, you will just have to download the Live CD and this file in the same directory. After you install VMware Player, by just double clicking the virtual machine configuration file, in a few moments you will be able to see the features of the KDE desktop.

If VMware player will not run comfortably or the virtual machine does not start, you must open the configuration file with a text editor (like Notepad for example) and modify the value of the memory allocated to the host operating system, respectively the memsize parameter value. The virtual machine configuration file provided was tested successfuly on a computer with 1 GB of RAM.

In case of VirtualBox software, you will no longer need to create a virtual machine configuration file manually. By following these steps (the method is the same for any other operating system distributed as LiveCD ISO image), openSUSE 11.1 with KDE 4.1 will be available on top of your Windows desktop in a very short time.

If you have successfully installed the VirtualBox 2.1.0 application on Windows (related article: How To Install VirtualBox on Windows XP), first you will have to define a new virtual machine by using the New Virtual Machine Wizard:

In the Create New Virtual Machine window, you must enter the corresponding name (openSUSE 11.1) and select the guest operating system and its version (Linux, openSUSE):

In the next window, you must set the amount of memory to be allocated to the virtual machine:

By pressing the next button, in the new window, you must uncheck the checkbox corresponding to “Boot Hard Disk (Primary Master)” option. A warning window will appear and you must click Continue button:

In this window, by pressing the finish button, you will finalize the creation of the virtual machine for openSUSE 11.1:

In the main window of VirtualBox application, select settings and then CD/DVD ROM option. Check the checkbox next to Mount CD/DVD drive and the radio button next to ISO Image File options. Then browse for openSUSE 11.1 Live CD ISO and click the Select button in Virtual Media Manager:

By selecting the virtual machine and press the start button in the main window GUI of the VirtualBox application, you will be able to test the new features of KDE 4.1 and openSUSE 11.1. The next screenshots show various features of openSUSE 11.1:
