FreeBSD 7.1 (production release) is ready for free download since the beginning of the year 2009. It represents an operating system having an advanced structure and functionality, suitable for current server or desktop computers, because FreeBSD is capable to offer an incredible performance for any complex demands, such as management and hosting of websites with massive traffic.

FreeBSD 7.1 is the second release from the 7.0 series and comes with improvements of overall functionality and new features.

Regarding the desktop GUI, KDE and GNOME were updated to version 3.5.0, respectively 2.22.3. The GENERIC kernels for AMD64 and i86 platforms have ULE scheduler as default.

As a consequence, the performance of multicore systems will be increased in case of system resources consuming tasks. In the same time, Dtrace ( a dynamic tracing framework) has support for usage inside the kernel.

The changes of boot loader will permit the booting operations from USB and GPT-labeled devices. Other significant modifications in this version are: the addition of cpuset(2) system call and cpuset(1) command, the availability of a new NFS Lock Manager (NLM) client and DVD-sized media for the amd64 and i386 architectures (the complete descriptions of the new features is available in the FreeBSD 7.1 Release Notes.

FreeBSD 7.1 can be deployed on the next types of compatible platforms: amd64, i386, ia64, pc98, powerpc and sparc64. The FTP and BitTorrent download links of ISO images necessary for the installation of FreeBSD 7.1 are available from the official website.
