Over 100,000 iGoogle and Google Gadgets On A Linux Desktop: gOS 3.1 Gadgets (SP1)
A new version of the popular operating system based on Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS (Hardy Heron), gOS was released: gOS 3.1 Gadgets (SP1). Besides the fact it can launch any of over 100000 existing iGoogle and Google Gadgets on startup, gOS 3.1 Gadgets (SP1) comes with new features that offer users a better flexibility in finalization of their tasks.
gOS 3.1 Gadgets (SP1) operating system includes OpenOffice.org, Mozilla Firefox 3.0, Skype, Mozilla Prism and Wine.
Mozilla Prism allows users to bring the web based applications at the desktop level by making them run independently of web browser (they run as standalone applications). By default, gOS 3.1 Gadgets (SP1) provide Google Mail, Google Calendar, Google Documents, and YouTube.
In the same time, any application designed for Windows operating system, like Windows Live Essentials can be deployed inside Linux through Wine, a very interesting utility having the role of a Windows compatibility layer for Linux.
gOS 3.1 Gadgets (SP1) operating system has very low system requirements: x86 processor with a frequency of at least 1GHz and 256 MB RAM. It is distributed as ISO LiveCD (693 MB) that must be burned on a CD or DVD before beginning the installation. After the computer is rebooted with the gOS CD in the CD-ROM drive, the user will be guided automatically through the installation steps.
gOS 3.1 Gadgets was selected as the third best Linux based operating system when debuted last year at Wal-Mart stores. NetBooks and NetTops powered by gOS 3.1 Gadgets will be distributed across the US and the rest of the world.
