KNOPPIX is a Linux distribution suitable to be used as a desktop operating system, educational CDs publishing or for data recovery. It can be deployed as a LiveCD which includes 2 GB of executable free software, without being the need to install any application on the local hard drive, because the software existing on the LiveCD is easy accessible through on-the-fly decompression. In the same time, the Knoppix LiveDVD edition provides over 8 GB of executable free software.

The latest version, KNOPPIX 6.0 / ADRIANE 1.1 distributed as LiveCD ISO, comes with many enhancements, like LXDE (a lightweight graphical environment), speech support in text menu mode for ADRIANE (Audio Desktop Reference Implementation And Networking Environment), OpenOffice 3.0.1, Firefox/Iceweasel 3.0.5 and more.

KNOPPIX 6.0 / ADRIANE 1.1 seems to be the most accessible Linux distribution for blind people or with vision disabilities, because the default startup will provide users the speech support in text menu mode automatically, without being need to type its corresponding boot option.

This KNOPPIX release (”Microknoppix”) is completely rewritten based on the previous boot system. As a consequence, the boot sequence is accelerated by the execution of simultaneous tasks of system initialization (parallelized hardware detection and configuration). The booting time value represents a half of the one corresponding to the KNOPPIX 5.x version.

As compared with the previous KNOPPIX version, the amount of installed software is reduced, as well as the dependencies for specific components. In these conditions, a custom re-master of KNOPPIX could have a file size of 256 MB or less. Even more, a KNOPPIX based bootable USB can be made from the CD with the “flash-knoppix” option.
