In a post on the Facebook Developers blog, regarding the Facebook involvement in creation of open identity frameworks, Mike Schroepfer stated:”We’re happy to announce today that we are formalizing our support of the OpenID Foundation by officially joining the board. It is our hope that we can take the success of Facebook Connect and work together with the community to build easy-to-use, safe, open and secure distributed identity frameworks for use across the Web.”
OpenID is a popular free framework for user-centric digital identity. The user will no longer need the creation of multiple accounts across websites OpenID enabled: only one digital identity can be used for login in. In this way the management of login data is simplified, as well as the web navigation experience.
For example, you can login with an OpenID on the following websites: AOL, Blogger, Flickr, LiveJournal, Technorati and other. Given the general tendency of major websites and web service providers to make the web more accessible with OpenIDs, the addition of the possibility of login based on an OpenID for Facebook will definitely increase the popularity of this widely used social network.
