An Alternative To Puppy Linux: TinyMe 2009 “Acorn” Alpha 1
If you are looking for a lightweight Linux distribution capable to offer a full desktop experience, while the occupied hard drive space is minimal, TinyMe (a remaster of PCLinuxOS) is an alternative to Puppy Linux, Slax or Damn Small Linux, intended to ensure a fast speed of applications execution and of an optimal computer behavior.
On the TinyMe official website, there are maintained three releases in the same time. Two of TinyMe releases are stable: the “Droplet”, which has the lowest file size allowing you to choose the desired programs to be installed and the “Acorn” release comes with pre-installed programs suitable for a minimalist Linux distribution.
The latest development release (or testing release) TinyMe 2009 “Acorn” Alpha 1 will offer many new enhancements as compared with TinyMe 2008.0 version, such as Linux Kernel 2.6.26.8, LZMA compression on the LiveCD and drives identification performed by UUID.
The main software suite existing into TinyMe 2008.0 was maintained. As a consequence, alongside AbiWord word processor, Opera web browser, Audacious media player, Asunder CD ripper, Sylpheed e-mail client, ePDFView and SciTE, there are added Osmo personal information manager and Hv3 web browser. In the same time, XArchiver, gFTP and GThumb were removed.
In TinyMe 2009 “Acorn” Alpha 1 the LZMA compression could determine a long boot time for the LiveCD and the Linux Kernel 2.6.26.8 could not be compatible with AMD K6-2 systems. TinyMe 2008.0 and TinyMe 2008.1 “Droplet” can be downloaded from here. TinyMe 2009 “Acorn” Alpha 1 is also available for free download from the mirrors published on the official website.
