How To Change The Default Interface Language For Your phpBB Forum
phpBB is a widely used forum (discussion board) due to its simplicity of installation and the high number of customization possibilities provided. It can be made to work as a blog or as a news website having also the forum functionality in the same time. There are available many implementation options, depending on your needs. Besides the modular design and the support for many types of database servers, the latest phpBB version (3.0.4) provides a multi-language GUI (Graphical User Interface) which allows the localization of the phpBB installation into the native users language.
The changing of the default phpBB language is a task that takes less than five minutes to be completed. First, you will have to download the desired language pack and unpack it into the Language directory situated in the main phpBB installation directory. During the extraction of the archive content, the directory structure must remain the same, otherwise the localized version of phpBB displayed in your language will not be available.
There is also required to install the images set package containing the localized buttons for the current style of your phpBB forum. The necessary packages are available for free download as ZIP archives and must be unpacked into the styles directory.
After these operations were performed, you will have to login to the Administrator Control Panel and select the Language packs menu entry situated under the System tab in order to install the desired language.
Then, select the General tab – Board Settings and change the default language to the new installed one. When you will logout and respectively login again to the Administrator Control Panel, the change of interface language will be noticed. Forum users could be allowed to select the desired interface language from their account settings area.
