It is Official: YouTube Goes Offline
In a previous article, we have presented a simple method to download YouTube videos with full quality as H.264 (MPEG4) files. From now on, you will do not have to apply these kind of tricks to make available offline the video files published on YouTube. A recent post on YouTube Official Blog shows the fact that video owners will have the possibility to permit the downloading of their files.
YouTube partners who want to make available their videos offline, will be able to share them under the Creative Commons, Personal (non-commercial use only) or Public Domain licenses, which permits the usage of the downloaded content in certain conditions.
The offline availability of the YouTube videos has many advantages, especially in the absence of an Internet connection, according to Thai Tran, Product Manager at YouTube: “ For example, universities use YouTube to share lectures and research with an ever-expanding audience. In an effort to promote the sharing of information, we are testing free downloads of YouTube videos from Stanford, Duke, UC Berkeley, UCLA, and UCTV (broadcasting programs from throughout the UC system). YouTube users who are traveling or teachers who want to show these videos in classrooms with limited or no connectivity should find this particularly useful.”
The YouTube partners can choose the option to allow users to download their videos for free or by paying a certain fee through Google Checkout payment gateway. The prices and the types of licenses of the released videos are established exclusively by the publishers.
Videos can be downloaded in an MP4 format by following the link situated below the left-hand corner of the video. From the My Purchases tab (under the MyVideos entry), the YouTube users are able to see the previously purchased video files. In order to offer your videos to other users for free download officially on YouTube, first you will have to sign up as partner.
