Debian GNU/Linux 5.0: First Impressions

Debian GNU/Linux, the oldest Linux distribution existing on the market, has a new stable release: version 5.0. After a constant development of twenty two months, the Debian Project has just announced the availability of Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 (coded name Lenny), a free to use operating system suitable for servers, because its development stages are focused on stability and security. In the same time, the desktop version seems to be slower as compared with other Linux distributions.

Debian GNU/Linux version 5.0 provides support for twelve different processor architectures: Sun SPARC (sparc), HP Alpha (alpha), Motorola/IBM PowerPC (powerpc), Intel IA-32 (i386), IA-64 (ia64), HP PA-RISC (hppa), MIPS (mips, mipsel), ARM (arm, armel), IBM S/390 (s390), and AMD64 and Intel EM64T (amd64).

In this release, there are included over 7770 new software packages for a total of 23200 packages (13400 software packages have been updated). The compatibility with modern hardware is also ensured through the new Linux kernel version 2.6.26 and X.Org 7.3 (X server autoconfigures itself according to the existing hardware).

Debian GNU/Linux version 5.0 has many desktop environments too: GNOME 2.22, KDE 3.5.10, Xfce 4.4.2 and LXDE 0.3.2.1. Alongside these desktop environments, you can find popular software like OpenOffice.org 2.4.1, KOffice 1.6.3, GIMP 2.4.7, Iceweasel 3.0.6 (a browser similar with Firefox), development tools (Apache 2.2.9, Samba 3.2.5, Python 2.5.2 and 2.4.6, Perl 5.10.0, PHP 5.2.6, PostgreSQL 8.3.6, MySQL 5.0.51a, GNU Compiler Collection 4.3.2 ), chat clients (Pidgin 2.4.3) and more.

A close attention was given to multimedia support and applications. Now, Adobe Flash are supported via the swfdec or Gnash plugins and new games (puzzle and first-person shooters) can also be found in Debian GNU/Linux version 5.0.

Debian GNU/Linux version 5.0 can be deployed with the help of a LiveCD or LiveDVD, on a computer having a compatible processor architecture. The minimal bootable CD image, as well as other types of LiveCDs releases can be found on the official website.
