Microsoft has just launched for testing the Service Pack 2 (SP2) Release Candidate (6002.1667.090130) for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. The Service Pack 2 RC comes with many bug fixes and performance improvements alongside the ones contained in SP1 (SP2 RC offers 691 bug fixes). An interesting addition into SP2 RC is the Service Pack Clean-up tool which removes the files corresponding to SP1, in this way optimizing the space used on hard drive.

The Microsoft Service Pack 2 RC for Windows Vista and Server 2008 will enable for the operating system the support for new hardware like VIA Technologies 64-bit central processing unit, the capability of recording files on Blu-Ray discs, higher performance for Wi-Fi connections and more.

The user experience will be enhanced through the Windows Search 4.0 feature, which includes the Microsoft Search technology with optimized indexing and relevant search results display mechanisms.

Microsoft does not made special mentions about the release of Windows Vista SP2 RC, as well as the exact date when the final version will be available to the public: ”Microsoft distributed notification of an update to Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 SP2 testers in an effort to gain additional feedback. We continuously engage with our partners and testers on the development of service packs and we will track customer and partner feedback from the beta program before setting a final date for distribution. We will have more to share on Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 SP2 soon and are targeting final delivery in Q2 2009.”, as a company spokesperson stated.

According to Mary Jo Foley, the unofficial date of the stable version release of Vista SP2 is expected to be in April. This date could also correspond to the release of Windows 7 RC and Windows 7 server. The SP2 (6002.1667.090130) for Windows Vista and Server 2008 can be installed from Windows Update by Microsoft Connect testers.
