Titanium Preview Release 2 Has Linux Support
Soon after the first release of Titanium, the open source platform which brings the web technologies into desktop applications, Appcelerator, Inc. has announced the availability for free download of the Titanium Preview Release 2 (PR2). This version of Titanium platform comes with major updates, such as the Linux support, extensibility API and interoperability between C++, JavaScript, Ruby and Python. Since the apparition of Titanium, many developers asked if a Linux version will be released. In a recent statement, Jeff Haynie, CEO of Appcelerator, Inc. explains the causes of a rapid building of Linux support: “Linux is a first class citizen in Titanium. In under three months, after the first release of Titanium, we were able to build out Linux support. This speed of innovation and execution demonstrates the benefit of Appcelerator’s use of open technologies and open collaboration within our community.”
Starting with this Titanium version, the Modules can be written in C++, JavaScript, Ruby or Python, due to the new Module API implemented for an easier platform core extendability. In the same time, the developer is allowed to create application scripts in Python and Ruby. The cross language binding layer will permit those scripts to make use of any Titanium Modules, independent of the type of programming language in which they are built.
Titanium popularity as open source platform for Rich Internet Applications creation is increasing. Currently it supports applications built with classic or modern web technologies, such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript or Adobe Flash, Microsoft Silverlight, jQuery and more. The current version of Titanium is bundled with a full IRC chat client, connected by default with Titanium Developer Channel.
