Guardian Open Platform: 1 Million Of Free Articles and Videos For Niche Websites
Starting with March 10, 2009, The Guardian launched an Open Platform containing services for building applications based on Guardian content. The Open Platform is formed by two products, namely Content API and Data Store, which provides free access to The Guardian content published since 1999 (approximately one million of articles, videos, images and more). In exchange, the applications developers must participate in the building of the new The Guardian advertising network.
The third party services will be included into a lightweight framework (The Guardian application platform), which will be ready in the near future.
The Content API allows you to get The Guardian content and to repackage it into Internet Applications, while the Data Store gives access to a collection of high quality data sets gathered by The Guardian jurnalists. The initial release is a beta trial and the access will be granted on a limited basis. The maximum number of accepted queries is 5000 for a day.
According to the guardian.co.uk, “The API dramatically reduces the cost of experimentation. New prototypes can be developed in less man hours than it would take to have a meeting to discuss the project.” The developers will be able to use free text search, as well as tags for creating feeds based on protocols like XML, JSON and ATOM.
Since 1999, when the first RSS feeds were provided shortly after the launch of guardian.co.uk, The Guardian created forums and made public extensive resources for the Internet public. Now, with the deployment of the Open Platform, there is intended the massive promotion of “Guardian Everywhere” across the entire web, in the spirit of main Guardian principles:”permanence, addressibility, discoverability (mutliple routes to the content) and openness”.
