Vyatta Community Edition 5.0.2: New Features

Vyatta Community Edition (VC) is a Linux based software intended to provide an open source alternative to router, firewall or VPN related applications released under very expensive commercial licenses. Recently, a new stable version of Vyatta Community Edition (5.0.2) was released. It is the same with Vyatta Community Edition 5.0.2 Beta 3 and as a consequence, users who already had installed it, do not need to perform an upgrade. The 5.0.2 version of VC comes with new features and behavior changes.

In this release there was introduced a redesign web graphical user interface which practically is the “mirror” of the command-line interface (CLI): the commands hierarchy of the GUI corresponds to the CLI structure.

As compared with the previous versions when were supported IPsec site-to-site Virtual Private Network (VPN) and remote access IPsec and Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) VPN, VC 5.0.2 adds support for OpenVPN, which will ensure both site-to site and remote access modes. Even more, OpenVPN has its own communication protocol and manages NAT easier.

Vyatta Community Edition 5.0.2 will also provide an intrusion protection system and traffic filtering by analyzing the traffic content characteristics. The packets associated with a discovered attack will be dropped.

Regarding the behavior changes of this VC version, the antivirus functionality was removed and the root partition must have a minimum size of 1000 MB.

Vyatta Community Edition 5.0.2 can be deployed from a LiveCD, hard disk, USB memory stick, compact flash or within a virtual machine (this version provides an enhanced support to ensure maximum performance in VMware environments). The entire list of new features is available into the Release Notes document:
