Opera Turbo is the latest server-side compression technology which delivers a high browsing speed over Internet connections with a low bandwidth by reducing the network traffic up to 80% during data transfer. This technology was presented at the Mobile World Congress 2009 and is already introduced into the preview version of Opera 10 for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux(Unix). When the user deals with a limited bandwidth or a pay per usage plan (like in case of a mobile connection for example), besides the increased browsing speed, Opera Turbo will also reduce the traffic costs. As compared with Opera Mini, which is based on Opera Binary Markup Language, Opera Turbo uses a proxy (Opera Web Optimization Proxy) to request the web content (JavaScript, images,text) directly through the standard HTTP protocol optimized for bandwidth saving, therefore the website layout and text will be rendered normally.

The images resolution will be lower due to compression on server-side. On the other hand, Flash elements and GIF images will not be compressed: when an instance of a page is requested, the Flash elements are not downloaded. If the user wants to display them, they must click on the corresponding white space labeled “plug-in content”.

The compression process on server-side is not performed in case of all requested web page. The pages residing on Intranet or those behind a SSL connection will be rendered normally, without passing through the Opera Web Optimization Proxy.

Another feature added is the delayed script execution. It will be turned on alongside Opera Turbo determining a faster rendering of the content of web pages loaded with a high number of scripts.
