Twitter users have the possibility to receive and send updates to Twitter while they are away from the computer with the help of text messages (SMS) available as service on any mobile phone. While in North America the receiving of tweets through SMS was restricted, Vodafone UK users will be able to post and receive tweets for free in the next weeks, due to the agreement established between Twitter and Vodafone UK.
After this period, the sending of short text messages as tweets will be charged as any other normal SMS, no extra costs being involved and in the same time, the receiving of the updates from Twitter users you follow will be free of charge.
In case of UK Vodafone customers, the shortcode is 86444. To configure the receiving of Twitter updates on your mobile phone, you will have to navigate to the Twitter account Settings page in the Devices area. Here, a valid mobile phone number must be specified, according to the specifications made on the web page corresponding to the Devices area.
The agreement established between Twitter and Vodafone UK is one of a long series of attempts of increasing Twitter networking service availability through short text messages on mobile phones, according to the Twitter official blog:”Extending the power of the real-time network globally through the simple technology of SMS is a driving goal for Twitter.
