Puppy Linux 4.2 Has Widgets And Still Almost 100 MB
A new stable version of the one of the most flexible Linux distributions, Puppy Linux was just released. Puppy Linux 4.2 has almost 100 MB (99.99 MB precisely) in size, corresponding to the Standard Edition, while the Retro Edition has exactly 100 MB, these values being targeted with the purpose of keeping the distribution lightweight. Now, the users have the possibility to choose between two window managers: IceWM or JVM, while extra themes including Clearlooks Gtk+2 theme engine are also available. A new addition to the Puppy Linux default desktop is represented by colorful widgets (Pwidgets), which continuously run as desktop programs. As a consequence, you will be informed any moment about the system status, current time, latest news or weather with the help of widgets like battery, wireless, clock, RSS feed and more.
Audio files based on the latest codecs (flac, .ogg, and .mp3) can be played with AlsaPlayer and Pmusic. Also new in this Puppy release is the possibility to access Internet radio through streamtuner. The video playback is available in full screen with the help of Gxine supported by Flash Player 9.0.152.0.
You will find more communication tools such as SeaMonkey Mail e-mail client, Meebo web chat, Psip VoIP and instant messaging client, and XChat IRC client. In the same time SeaMonkey 1.1.15 web browser was improved with MonkeyMenu extension.
Other new features available in this release are:
- office productivity enhanced with AbiWord 2.6.6 word processor, Gnumeric 1.8.4 spreadsheet editor, HomeBank 4.0.2 personal accounting, Osmo 0.2.0 personal organizer, and Xpad 2.14 sticky notes;

- spritely image viewer GPicView with slideshow capability;
- super-quick archive management with Xarchiver;

- enhanced boot-up and shutdown procedures with extra options at shutdown;
- superior live-CD/DVD re-mastering with Remaster Xpress (RemaX);
- easy access to downloads facilitated with Puppy Download Accelerator and Transmission BitTorrent client
- programming versatility with tcl/tk, Glade, and freeBASIC;
- new games;
online, live, and free technical support - just click on the chat icon on the desktop;
As compared with the previous version, Puppy Linux 4.2 comes with many new features and enhancements included in a Linux distribution having almost the same file size (100 MB). Puppy Linux 4.2 Standard Edition and Retro Edition can be downloaded as Live CD ISO from the official website.
