Ubuntu 9.04 Beta Was Released
The long waited Beta version of the popular Linux distribution Ubuntu, Ubuntu 9.04 Beta was finally arrived. It has many new features since Ubuntu 8.10: GNOME 2.26 desktop, X.Org server 1.6, an improved boot performance, Linux kernel 2.6.28, Ext4 file system support, cloud computing and turn-key mail servers. Ubuntu 9.04 Beta is intended only for testing and as a consequence it is not suitable for usage on production machines.
The latest version of GNOME desktop environment (2.26) provides new utilities and a better overall functionality, such as brasero, the all in one CD burning application and the support for the optimal management of multiple monitors, based on the updated gnome-display-properties.
The X.Org server comes alongside a high number of free video cards drivers. In the same time the ATI driver uses the EXA acceleration method by default, has support for 2D acceleration in case of the newest R6xx/R7xx family of video cards and for 3D acceleration only up to R5xx cards series.
Ubuntu 9.04 beta also provides a new notification system, an optimized startup process resulting in an increased boot performance, its entire architecture being powered of the version 2.6.28 of the Linux kernel.
Regarding the default file system type, ext3 is still in place, but for the next release, ext4 could be considered to be implemented as default, based on the users feedback. Ubuntu 9.04 beta is available for free download as ISO files from the official website.
