Google App Engine Provides Support For Java Language
Google App Engine, the cloud computing platform which allows the building of web based applications on Google’s infrastructure, now has support for Java language. In addition, the developers are allowed to create AJAX web applications in Java with the help of the new Google Web Toolkit and a Google Plugin for Eclipse.
The Java programming can be performed based on standard Java APIs, according to a post published on Google Code Blog: “First, we’re giving developers an ‘early look’ at Java™ language support for App Engine. The team has taken a standards based approach, implementing standard Java APIs on top of App Engine where possible. So instead of using the underlying App Engine datastore API, developers can program against Java Data Objects or Java Persistence API”.
Besides the support introduced for Java language, various enhancements were also made for Google App Engine:
- Access to firewalled data: grant policy-controlled access to your data behind the firewall.
- Cron support: schedule tasks like report generation or DB clean-up at an interval of your choosing.
- Database import: move GBs of data easily into your App Engine app. Matching export capabilities are coming soon, hopefully within a month.
In order to get started with Google App Engine, you will have to sign up and download the App Engine SDK (free documentation is also provided). Regarding the availability of Google App Engine, it is opened only for the first 10,000 developers who sign up (more accounts are planned to be included soon).
Google App Engine will give you many advantages and more development flexibility: the web applications are easier to build, maintain and adapt to the traffic and data storage requirements. In the same time, the hosting of the applications is no longer a serious problem, because the developers just only have to upload the web application and it will be ready to go.
