Android 1.5 Has A New Linux Kernel
Google has just informed developers and users that the next release of the Android platform (Android 1.5) debuts with the immediate availability of Android 1.5 SDK, which is ready for free download in case of commonly used operating systems: Windows, Mac OS X (Intel) and Linux (i386). As compared with the previous version, the Android 1.5 platform contains many new features and improvements, for both users and developers. For now on, the applications can be created more efficiently for multiple versions of Android in a single SDK installation.
Developers should also know that the new Android 1.5 SDK is not compatible with the ADT 0.8 (Eclipse plugin)and earlier. In the same time the older Android SDK versions will not work with the newer versions of the ADT Eclipse plugin.
Android 1.5 platform will show many user interface refinements, performance improvements, new features, APIs and developer tools. The user experience will be enhanced through an on-screen soft keyboard, widgets(analog clock, calendar, music player, picture frame, and search), possibility of video recording and playback, stereo bluetooth support, a new Linux kernel (2.6.27), live folders, SIM Application Toolkit 1.0 and more.
The APIs included into Android 1.5 platform could be changed in the final release and as a consequence there is recommended to not compile the applications developed with the Android SDK preview version.
