Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop: The Core Of Super Ubuntu

ubuntu-logoAs we all expected, Canonical Ltd. has just officially announced the immediate availability of Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop Edition, Ubuntu 9.04 Server Edition and Ubuntu 9.04 Netbook Remix. In the same time, after the release of stable version of Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop Edition, Hacktolive.org will unveil their Linux distribution (Super Ubuntu) with a new name and non-Ubuntu features, like App Runner, a lightweight utility which allows the easy launching of executable files (.sh, .elf, .bin, .py) directly from the context menu.

Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop Edition is characterized by a shorter booting time (under 25 seconds) and enables access to a complete computing environment deployable on any modern desktop, laptop and netbook models.

The user experience is enhanced by the existence of the possibility of fast switching between Wi-Fi and 3G environments, as well as by the new applications suite. For example, OpenOffice.org 3.0, a complete office suite which provides a total compatibility with Microsoft Office documents, will allow users to create professional documents, presentations and spreadsheets for free, as compared with the Microsoft Office package.

Ubuntu 9.04 Server Edition comes with improved virtualization options with the latest KVM features, clustering support in Samba file server and easier mail server setup with the integration of Dovecot-Postfix. Ubuntu 9.04 Server Edition will also provide Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud (UEC), intended to to build cloud environments inside firewalls. Now, the organizations can use cloud computing safer, without being the need to move their data to an external provider.

These are the main new features introduced into Ubuntu 9.04 Server Edition:

-Extended hardware compatibility ensures easier deployment for users
-Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) can now pre-install their own default first-boot configuration of Ubuntu Server Edition and replicate it across all their Ubuntu servers
-Ubuntu Server on Amazon EC2 helps businesses to deploy services to external clouds
-Virtualization updates, including support for nested virtualization, further improve infrastructure management efficiencies
-New mail server features include shared user authentication and enhanced spam protection
-Samba 3.3 provides extended cluster support for file serving and integrates with the latest Microsoft systems
-Enhanced integration between OpenChange and Microsoft Exchange encourages interoperability
-Suspend-and-Resume features deliver power-management improvements
-Security enhancements with Apparmor offer greater peace of mind
-The Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud uses an open source system known as Eucalyptus to enable a company to test, deploy and experiment with their own private, in-house cloud that matches the Amazon EC2 API
-Advanced Message Queue Protocol (AMQP) support brings the emerging standard for high-performance enterprise messaging to Ubuntu users through Rabbit MQ
-MySQL upgrade from the fully-supported 5.0 to 5.1 is possible
