In an article published last week, we have presented the new features included into the stable version of Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop Edition (code named Jaunty Jackalope), which was launched on April 23, 2009. Ubuntu fans, now can also try and eventually use Super OS Linux distribution, (the previous edition was named Super Ubuntu) because it is just Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop Edition but with more features, deployment options and customization alternatives. The author of Super OS Linux ensures users that this distribution is 100% Ubuntu 9.04, but since it includes software not present in the official repositories, its name cannot contain the Ubuntu keyword. Let’s see what new goodies included Hacktolive.org within Super OS, alongside Ubuntu 9.04.

As we also mentioned in the previous article, one of the features still not existing into Ubuntu 9.04 is App Runner, a lightweight utility which allows the easy launching of executable files (.sh, .elf, .bin, .py) directly from the context menu.

As compared with Super Ubuntu, Super OS comes with a better multimedia support, (VLC, support for DVD-playback, MP3 support and other multimedia codecs), an in the same time an improved Internet experience through the inclusion of aMSN, Opera, Firefox, Flash, Moonlight and Google Gears.

Portable applications are also present into Super OS (they can run with a single mouse click, an installation is not required): Firefox 3.0.9, Skype 2.0.0.72, Furius ISO Mount 0.11.1.1, Opera 9.64, XnView MP 0.12 (ALPHA) and FileZilla 3.2.4.

In addition to the Ubuntu 9.04 official repositories, Super OS has its own software repository, making easy the system update process. Super OS can be rapidly deployed on an USB drive with the help of two tools: the usb-creator (already included on Ubuntu 9.04) or cd2usb (a Windows program already existing on the DVD). Super OS can also be installed directly in Windows with Wubi, the automatic installer.

Super OS was made with Reconstructor, an utility design to create customized versions of Ubuntu CDs. You can also try Remastersys in order to make your own custom Ubuntu or Super OS Live CD or DVD.

Super OS authors have granted to the users the possibility to perform an upgrade from the currently installed Ubuntu or Super Ubuntu Linux distribution, but a clean installation of Super OS would be a better choice. Super OS is available for free download as Live DVD and Install DVD only for x86 machines (download links are published on the Super OS official website).
