First Windows 7 RC Update: Internet Explorer 8 Patch
In a similar manner as in case of Google Chrome, which provides the possibility to close an unresponsive tab and not the browser, the developers of Internet Explorer 8 created a mechanism that isolates a crashed tab from other opened tabs having various active processes, like a movie playing. Internet Explorer 8 in Windows 7 Release Candidate uses a timer which monitors the time of response of tabs: if a certain tab does not respond within a given time interval, the user is prompted through a pop-up dialog box to choose one of the following options: recover the page, close the page or wait for the page to respond.
On computers under high load conditions or with low performance, the Internet Explorer 8 deployed within Windows 7 Release Candidate may stop responding, because the time-out value is frequently exceeded.
When Internet Explorer 8 stops, the user receives the following error message: “A webpage is not responding on the following website:
Due to the fact that certain Windows 7 RC users are prompted too frequently to recover from hung tabs, Microsoft has decided to allow them to turn off the tab hang reporting by providing a patch, which is in the same time, the first Windows 7 RC update since its official release date.
The update only applies to Windows 7 RC and is available via Windows Update. This issue will be solved in Windows 7 RTM. After you apply the update, the computer must be restarted. As an alternative, you can also create a DWORD registry value named HangResistance with the value 0 in one of the following registry subkey:
-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MAIN
-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MAIN
