Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.8 Was Announced
The Red Hat Enterprise Linux Team has just announced the immediate availability of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.8, which marks the eighth update in the product’s seven-year lifecycle. First unveiled in February 2005, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 product is in Production 2 lifecycle phase, meaning that in the future, the updates will be focused on critical fixes, rather than performing major modifications of the platform code.
Every new update of Red Hat Enterprise Linux comes with new features, as well as bug fixes and security patches. In the transition to a newer Red Hat Enterprise Linux version the compatibility with the ecosystem of certified hardware and software is also maintained.
These are the key features introduced into Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.8:
-The virtualization performance and scale is improved through optimized devices drivers for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 virtual guests deployed on the KVM hypervisor. In the same time, the virtual guest support for up to 256 disk devices was increased from 16, allowing the usage of larger applications in virtual machine.
-Windows interoperability and file system support is also better through the Samba update
-General performance is optimized through three new “kernel tunables” and the updated high-speed networking support.
-Storage and filesystem enhancements: an improved Device Mapper reporting was introduced into Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.8.
-The developer tools were updated too: the GNU Compiler Collection allows customers to compile applications on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 with compatibility with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.8 update can be accessed automatically through Red Hat Network by the customers with a valid Red Hat Enterprise Linux subscription.
