Fedora 11 Has Support For Ext4 And Fingerprint Readers
The beta label has been removed from Fedora 11. The major release of this Linux distribution will provide a better performance, tasks execution flexibility and overall computer stability through new features, like the support for Ext4 filesystem, fingerprint readers, volume control, kernel modsetting for Intel, ATI and Nvidia video cards, automatic font and mime-type installation and more. Developers will discover improved virtualization features such as a better console and a rewritten VM creation wizard, as well as the MinGW (Windows cross compiler), which allows the creation of Windows executable applications right within Fedora.
The font and mime-type installation is performed by PackageKit when they are needed to display content written in foreign languages. The handlers for specific content types will also be automatically installed.
Initially featured only on a few ATI video cards models, now, kernel modesetting (KMS) is also available for more Intel, ATI and Nvidia cards models. Based on this feature, the graphical boot speed is higher.
Another notable addition in Fedora 11 is represented by the enhanced support for fingerprint readers (biometric authentication mechanisms). The installation and usage of fingerprint readers will be easier, because of a close integration into the operating system of all required pieces for fingerprint readers deployment.
The time needed to update packages in Fedora 11 is reduced through the introduction of Presto, which will download only the information representing the difference between an installed package and the new one.
Fedora 11 (code-named Leonidas) is available for free download as Live CD (GNOME or KDE desktop versions) from the Fedora website, torrents or mirrors.
