WordPress 2.8 Is Faster
The availability of WordPress version 2.8 was just announced. WordPress 2.8 code named Baker shows many new notable features and improvements of taxonomies, themes, widgets and speed of response. The administrator graphical user interface is similar with WordPress 2.7, but various tweaks were implemented into the newer version of WordPress, such as the possibility to install a theme contained in the theme directory with a single mouse click, right within the dashboard.
As compared with the plain text editor available in the previous WordPress version, the new CodePress editor provides syntax highlighting, when a widget or a theme is edited. In the same time, the widgets interface was redesigned, such that you are allowed to edit widgets on the fly, use multiple instances of the same widget or drag and drop widgets between sidebars (the widgets API is also improved).
The new Screen Options on every page (the tab situated in the top right of the main dashboard window) permit the customization of the number of widgets shown.
The highlights of WordPress 2.8 (over 790 bugs were fixed in WordPress 2.8) are shown in the next list:
-New drag-and-drop widgets admin interface and new widgets API
-Syntax highlighting and function lookup built into plugin and theme editors
-Browse the theme directory and install themes from the admin
-Allow the dashboard widgets to be arranged in up to four columns
-Allow configuring the number of items to show on management pages with an option in Screen Options
-Support timezones and automatic daylight savings time adjustment
-Support IIS 7.0 URL Rewrite Module
-Faster loading of admin pages via script compression and concatenation
WordPress 2.8 can be freely downloaded. If you already have installed WordPress version 2.7.1, the update can be performed automatically from the dashboard, by hitting the “Update to 2.8″ button.
