Free Microsoft Antivirus: Morro Beta
Already announced in November 2008, the free Microsoft antivirus product code-named “Morro”, now is tested by Microsoft employees. Morro beta is expected to be launched in the second half of 2009 year, but a specific date was not provided yet. It will offer comprehensive protection from malware, including viruses, spyware, rootkits and trojans, as a free alternative for commercial antivirus products.
Being based on Microsoft’s award-winning malware protection engine, Morro seems to be a reliable candidate to replace Windows Defender, even it is not already clear how will Morro run alongside Windows Defender.
On the other hand, Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 will get with Morro a better security of their computers at no cost.
Morro antivirus will have a smaller footprint as compared with similar products, using fewer computer resources. In this way, users with older computers will be able to run this antivirus without affecting overall system performance in a considerable manner.
The question is how will be influenced the sales of Symantec Corp and McAfee Inc. or of the other popular antivirus software companies by the existence of this Microsoft antivirus soultion, because Morro is considered to be an effective competitor on the market for several similar commercial products.
