Firefox 3.5 Could Celebrate 1 Billion Firefox Downloads
Last year, the release of Firefox 3.0 milestone was marked by the unpleasant discovery of a critical security flaw with high severity, only in a few hours after the browser was launched, which put in danger over ten of million of computers. Now, the new Firefox 3.5 stable version will be released on Tuesday morning (June 30, 2009), according to PC Magazine. There is also expected that the total number of Firefox downloads to surpass 1 billion with the official launching of Firefox 3.5.
Regarding the web browsers security, it is well known the existence of hidden security flow, which are shown when a certain threat (malware) become active. Therefore, an update of the current browser version including the security patch will be made available by the developing company in the shortest time possible. From this point of view, Firefox 3.5, having three release candidate versions in only three weeks, throughly tested by at least a million of users, should be free of critical security flaws, while minor security issues could still exist.
The surpassing of 1 billion total Firefox browser downloads, corresponding to a few hundreds of million active users, was estimated by Mike Beltzner, Mozilla’s director of Firefox. In the same time, you can see the real number of Firefox downloads, as well as the most probable day when the number of 1 billion Firefox downloads will be reached, with a simple Perl script, fxcounter, made by 7is7.com.
The fxcounter Perl program collects the number of total downloads directly from the Mozilla feed. You can see the script in action on the 7is7.com website. On the other hand, a custom version of the script publishes the updates of the total number of Firefox downloads on a Twitter microblog.
If you are interested to be among the first users who download Firefox 3.5 browser, stay tuned with Mozilla website, because the Firefox 3.5 download link should be published in the next hours.
