In May 2009, there was announced the Release To Web (RTW) of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 SP2, which represents a service pack designated to update both operating systems. It contains all updates included in SP1 and will add support for new types of hardware and for several emerging standards. Initially, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 SP2 was launched only in five languages (English, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish), but the latest release is compatible with all 36 supported languages in Windows Server 2008 SP1 / Windows Vista SP1 operating systems.

If you have turned on Windows Vista Automatic Update, the update will be performed automatically: the service pack will be downloaded and the operating system will display a notification when it is ready to be installed.

In order to be able to deploy the Service Pack 2 on one of the supported operating systems (Windows Server 2008 SP2 for x86, x64 and IA-64 platforms and Windows Vista for x86 and x64 platforms) Service Pack 1 is a prerequisite.
