Beta Label Is Removed From Google Apps
Many Google applications, like Gmail for example, shown the beta label for a long period of time. Due to the confusion created by the true meaning of “beta” software, Google has decided to remove the beta label from Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs and Google Talk, in case of both enterprise and consumer versions.
According to Wikipedia, “Beta” nickname for a software designates the fact that it has passed the alpha testing stage of development and has been released to users for software testing before its official release.
Beta software practically represents the prototype of the software that is released to the public. Through the Beta testing process, users will provide feedback, so that any malfunctions found to be reported to the developers and corrected. Beta software could also cause crashes or data loss, because usually it is unstable.
In a recent blog post, Matthew Glotzbach, Director, Product Management, Google Enterprise explained the necessity to remove the beta label from Google Apps: “We’ve come to appreciate that the beta tag just doesn’t fit for large enterprises that aren’t keen to run their business on software that sounds like it’s still in the trial phase. So we’ve focused our efforts on reaching our high bar for taking products out of beta, and all the applications in the Apps suite have now met that mark.”
Google Apps users are also ensured that even a Google application has still the beta label or not, there are currently performed continually efforts for further development of the product. Gmail users are allowed to re-enable the logo containing the beta label from the Settings section, under the Labs tab.
