Facebook Versus Twitter In 2013
On the Facebook official blog, there was announced the current number of the Facebook social network users: 250 million. This record number of users marks an important step in the Facebook network evolution and also indicates the future trends regarding the impact of Facebook services over the majority of Internet users. On the other hand, as you might already know, from one ore more hacked official Twitter documents (from a total of 310), results that Twitter network target is to gather 1 billion users until the end of 2013. The question is who will win in the battle for the Internet social networking services supremacy, Facebook or Twitter?
If we will consider the data existing on Alexa, the traffic statistics show for the value of Traffic Rank 26 in case of Twitter, and 4 in case of Facebook, therefore Facebook is more popular than Twitter in terms of web traffic (of course, the Alexa traffic data can be used as a qualitative measurement method), but in the same time Twitter tends to go upper in the Alexa list of most popular websites, because the average Traffic Rank for seven days in July 2009 is 15.
Also according to Alexa statistics, the number of incoming links for Twitter is 169,785, while Facebook has 258,619 and again the order of magnitude is almost the same for both websites. The average time spent by users on Facebook is 25 minutes on a day, while on Twitter is only 8.5 minutes on a day.

Regarding the past and future evolution of Twitter and based on the hacked official Twitter documents, TechCrunch underlines: “As of February, Twitter expected their first revenue to come in Q3 2009 (which is now). A modest $400,000 was expected, followed by a more robust $4 million in Q4. The document also shows Twitter’s projected user growth (25 million by the end of 2009), which it has absolutely blown through already. By the end of 2010, Twitter expected to be at a $140 million revenue run rate. The numbers they were targeting for the end of 2013 are: 1 billion users, $1.54 billion in revenue, 5,200 employees and $1.1 billion in net earnings.”
In conclusion, the battle for the Internet supremacy for these two social networking services is quite close, according to the data presented in this article. For example, both social services have APIs, but Twitter has already a high number of desktop clients, which also provide off-browser access to the Facebook service too.
It is really hard to estimate what will happen in 2013, if we are taking into account the speed of Internet technology evolution and the rate of Internet growth.
