CDlinux is indeed a “compact Linux distribution” provided for free in three editions: Community (231 MB), Standard (70 MB) and Mini (console only 28 MB). It works with older computers having only 64 MB of RAM and can be deployed from various devices, such as CD, DoC, Flash, HD, or MD drive, via ATA, SATA, SCSI, USB, or IEEE1394 bus. Despite of low file size, CDlinux provides all necessary tools for your office related tasks or gaming needs. It even has Mesa3D for those of you who want to play 3D games and applications.

CDlinux contains Linux kernel 2.6.30.2, aufs2 20090720, Xorg server 1.6.2, XFCE 4.6.1, GTK 2.16.5, QT 4.5.2, Firefox 3.5.1, JRE 6u14 and more. You can even run Windows compatible applications inside CDlinux, because it also includes Wine.

Regarding the installation on the desired media, this Linux distribution is very flexible. For example, it could be booted directly from the Live CD ISO distribution archive with GRUB4DOS, an universal boot loader based on GNU GRUB. In the same time, is possible to boot CDLinux directly from the ISO image from within Windows by using an appropriate emulator, like MobaLiveCD.

In both cases, the user has the option to install it on a hard drive or a USB drive automatically. CDlinux could be used as a data rescue tool without the need to install it, mobile operating system on Flash drives or as a lightweight Linux environment complementary to the currently used operating system (Windows, Linux or Mac OS X).

The CDlinux desktop is very customizable from simple to use menus and you are also allowed to compile additional drivers and applications for CDLinux with the help of the new “devel” module, introduced in the latest version (CDLinux 0.9.3).

CDLinux can be succesfuly installed on a wide variety of file systems types, such as ext2, ext3, jfs, reiserfs, xfs, isofs, udf, as well as hfs, hfsplus, fat or ntfs, while they are compatible with the Linux kernel. CDLinux ISO images are available for free download from the official publisher website.
