Ubuntu 9.10 Alpha 3 Ships With Extra Hard Drives
Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) Alpha 3 has just been released. It has many new features, but notable is the default integration of the Ubuntu One file sharing service, which allows you to synchronize and share files between other computers and the Ubuntu One network storage service. Ubuntu Karmic Alpha 3 will also provide you a new desktop experience with the latest GNOME 2.27.4 development release.
Regarding the important changes of software included into Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) Alpha 3, you will notice the replacement of Pidgin with Empathy, which introduces the Telepathy framework. In the same time, gdm 2.27.4 login manager was rewriten from scratch, as compared to the previous version existing in earlier Ubuntu releases.
Other changes performed in Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) Alpha 3 are as follows:
-New Intel video driver architecture intended to solve performance issues noticed in case of Ubuntu 9.04. Video mode switching flicker at booting will be reduced and the suspend/resume operations will have a faster speed.
-Linux kernel was updated to version 2.6.31-3.19, based on Linux kernel 2.6.31-rc3.
-GCC-4.4 was introduced as the default compiler.
-the new “ext4″ filesystem is used by default when Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) Alpha 3 is installed
-GRUB 2 is the default boot loader for new installations of Karmic, replacing the previous GRUB “Legacy” boot loader.
The Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) Alpha 3 Linux distribution is available for free download as Live CD ISO images for both PC (Intel x86) and 64-bit PC (AMD64) platforms (desktop and server editions). Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) Alpha 3 is intended for testing only and should not be used on production machines, because it is still unstable.
