Google Latitude Was Launched For iPhone
Google Latitude, the service from Google which allows you to control your current location status and share it with friends from a mobile device or a computer, now was also launched for the iPhone and iPod touch as an application compatible with Safari browser. The Google Latitude app for the iPhone and iPod touch mobile devices works in a similar manner like the one corresponding to Android phones: the user is allowed to see its friends location on a map, as well as to modify the privacy settings.
On Google Mobile blog, Mat Balez, Product Manager, Google Mobile Team presents the main features and functionality of Google Latitude app for iPhone and iPod touch: “ You’ll also find basic Search and Directions functionality to help you get around the world. And just like our Google Maps for mobile client apps (and more recently on desktop Google Maps), you can press the “blue dot” to be taken to your approximate current location on the map with My Location, thanks to Safari now supporting the W3C Geolocation API.”
A minor disadvantage determined by the iPhone functionality, which does not permit the running of applications in the background, is represented by the Google Latitude app imposibility to provide a continuous location updates in the same manner, as in case of other mobile devices, like Android, Blackberry, Symbian and Windows Mobile.
Google Latitude web app is compatible with iPhone and iPod Touch OS 3.0 or later. In order to launch the Google Latitude app, you will have to go to this URL, by typing google.com/latitude in your Safari browser address bar. Currently, the service is available in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, but in the near future, more countries will enjoy the benefits of Google Latitude service on iPhone and iPod Touch devices.
