Facebook Denied The Usage Of Your Photos In Advertisements
According to the recent rumors, Facebook allowed third party advertisers to include users photos in ads, without their permission. Practically, Facebook would have changed the policies for third-party advertisers and the use of photos. In a prompt response to these rumors, Facebook ensured the community that the policies regarding the users privacy remain the same.
In a recent blog post published on Facebook blog, Barry Schnitt, manager of policy communications at Facebook, explains the source of rumors: “The advertisements that started these rumors were not from Facebook but placed within applications by third parties. Those ads violated our policies by misusing profile photos, and we already required the removal of those deceptive ads from third-party applications before this rumor began spreading.”
As a consequence, the ads were removed from the Facebook platform, alongside two advertising networks from providing services to Facebook applications, because they have violated the current policies. In the same time, all ads which could influence the Facebook user experience in a bad way, will be eliminated from the corresponding services existing on the social network.
Facebook users can report bad ads published on the network by clicking the thumbs-down icon that appears above or below the ad.
In order to clarify how profiles photos are used, Barry Schnitt added: “We’ve run advertisements from our own advertising system for more than a year that let your friends know if you have a direct connection with a product or service, in the same way that your friends learn through your News Feed if you’re connected with another friend or an organization’s Facebook Page. For example, if one of your friends becomes a fan of a Page, you may see an ad, like the one below, with your friend’s profile photo that indicates the action that friend has taken.”
