For testing purposes or just for fun, almost any existing Linux distribution can be rapidly deployed from its Live CD or DVD ISO image, without the need to perform an installation to a hard drive or a USB drive. Windows users who are curious to test or use Ubuntu without actually installing it on a partition of the hard drive, have at least five fast solutions to deploy Ubuntu from within Windows without affecting the currently installed operating system or modifying the structure of hard drive partitions. The majority of Linux users should have been heard about Wine, a program loader, which allows the running of Windows applications natively in Linux and other POSIX operating systems, without the performance penalties induced by an emulator. You may not believe, but it is true: Ubuntu 8.04 - the Hardy Heron, released in April 2008 can be mixed with the Windows XP operating system, without the need to install anything. The result is obvious: the native performance of an Ubuntu Linux distribution obtained on top of Windows XP desktop. Practically, the Ubuntu Linux and Windows coexist on the same computer by sharing the same desktop. The users are able to run Windows and Linux based applications in the same time, edit an existing file from both operating systems simultaneously, switch between opened Windows and Linux programs windows with the Alt+Tab shortcut and more. There are many ways in which you could run Windows applications on a Linux operating system. The most simple one is provided by Wine, a program loader based on Windows Application Programing Interface (API) library. Wine plays the role of the compatibility layer between the Windows program and Linux by translating the program instructions unknown by the current operating system. By using Wine, you will get the native performance of the Windows program because it not acts like an emulator which consumes more system resources.

While looking for new Linux distributions through the Google Search service, based on the “Linux distro” key phrase, on the first page of results returned for this query, the fourth entry shown the next home page title and description: “Microsoft Linux - the premier linux distro: Learn how you can use Microsoft Linux Technologies to expand your business or your desktop.” Following the link pointing to Microsoft Linux website, apparently, one can be amazed by finding the distribution description, related Linux resources, and what is most important: its price. KNOPPIX is a Linux distribution suitable to be used as a desktop operating system, educational CDs publishing or for data recovery. It can be deployed as a LiveCD which includes 2 GB of executable free software, without being the need to install any application on the local hard drive, because the software existing on the LiveCD is easy accessible through on-the-fly decompression. In the same time, the Knoppix LiveDVD edition provides over 8 GB of executable free software.
