Mandriva Linux 2010 Alpha 1: A Faster Boot Time

Mandriva Linux 2010 Alpha 1 was just announced to be available for free download on public mirrors as DVD ISO images compatible with 32bit and respectively 64bit platforms. It comes with major new features, such as KDE 4.3 Beta 2, GNOME 2.27.3 and Xfce 4.6.1 desktops environments, the recent stable release of the kernel 2.6.30 and X.org server 1.6.1.901. You will also notice an improved booting time for Mandriva Linux 2010 Alpha 1 Linux distribution.

Fedora 11 Has Support For Ext4 And Fingerprint Readers

The beta label has been removed from Fedora 11. The major release of this Linux distribution will provide a better performance, tasks execution flexibility and overall computer stability through new features, like the support for Ext4 filesystem, fingerprint readers, volume control, kernel modsetting for Intel, ATI and Nvidia video cards, automatic font and mime-type installation and more. Developers will discover improved virtualization features such as a better console and a rewritten VM creation wizard, as well as the MinGW (Windows cross compiler), which allows the creation of Windows executable applications right within Fedora.

Mac OS X Snow Leopard Was Unveiled

The recently unveiled by Apple, Mac OS X Snow Leopard will be delivered as an upgrade for Mac OS X Leopard users in September 2009, at a price of just only 29$. In the same time, Apple also presented the Developer Preview of Mac OS X Server Snow Leopard, an easy to setup server which delivers a 64-bit Unix operating system with support for open standards and with advanced security mechanisms for data protection.

Moblin 2.0 Beta: An Operating System For Netbooks

The open source project Moblin is mainly focused on creating a Linux-based platform optimized for mobile devices including Netbooks, Mobile Internet Devices, and In-vehicle infotainment systems. The latest version of this operating system, Moblin 2.0 Beta, has a visually rich, interactive user interface designed for Intel Atom based Netbooks. It was released for developer testing, while users will enjoy a new experience through unique ways of Internet browsing or media content management.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.8 Was Announced

The Red Hat Enterprise Linux Team has just announced the immediate availability of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.8, which marks the eighth update in the product’s seven-year lifecycle. First unveiled in February 2005, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 product is in Production 2 lifecycle phase, meaning that in the future, the updates will be focused on critical fixes, rather than performing major modifications of the platform code.

Mac OS X 10.5.7 Provides Enhanced Hardware Support

Just released, Mac OS X 10.5.7 includes various fixes that enhance the stability, security and hardware support for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard operating system. The security issues solved are related to Apache’s handling of FTP proxy requests, CoreGraphics and Safari web browser. Regarding the hardware support enhancements, Mac OS X 10.5.7 offers additional RAW image support for several third-party cameras, as well as improved performance of video playback and cursor movements for recent Macs with NVIDIA graphics. In the updated version of Mac OS X, an issue with Dvorak keyboard layout in Mac OS X 10.5.6 was also resolved.

BSDanywhere: UNIX For Everyone’s Desktop

BSDanywhere 4.5, a bootable LiveCD image containing OpenBSD 4.5 was just announced. OpenBSD is a free UNIX operating system based on BSD, multi-platform compatible. It provides support for binary emulation of applications from FreeBSD, Solaris, Linux, BSD/OS, SunOS and HP-UX. BSDanywhere is formed by the complete OpenBSD 4.5 system (without the compiler). In addition, it provides a graphical desktop environment, a collection of software and automatic detection of computer hardware. BSDanywhere supports a wide range of graphics cards, sound cards, SCSI and USB devices and many other peripherals.

Windows 7 RC Booting Time: 16.4 Seconds

Due to the fact that Windows 7 RC official version is free to download for everyone, now a comparison can be made between booting time values corresponding to Windows 7 Beta and Windows 7 Release Candidate. On the same machine having an Intel Celeron CPU E1200 working at a frequency of 1.6 GHz, 1 GB RAM and 160 GB HDD, we have measured a booting time for Windows 7 Release Candidate of 16.4 seconds, while Windows 7 Beta booting time was of 21.42 seconds (Windows XP booting time is over 30 seconds). Windows 7 Release Candidate not only boots faster than the previous version, but is also shows lower time of response in case of common actions, like opening a window, running an installed program or for the computer shut down process.

FreeBSD 7.2 Has A Larger Virtual Memory

FreeBSD 7.2, the UNIX based operating system intended for x86, amd64, ARM, IA-64, PowerPC, PC-98 and UltraSPARC architectures, represents the third release from the 7.x series. Version 7.2 of the FreeBSD operating system comes with many improvements of the overall functionality, as well as new features. Now, the virtual memory subsystem provides support for fully transparent use of superpages for application memory, kernel virtual address space was increased to 6 GB offering a larger virtual memory space, support for Ultra SPARC III (Cheetah) processor family was included and more.

Calculate Directory Server 9.5: LDAP Powered By Gentoo Linux

As the development team of Calculate Linux Desktop has promised, Calculate Directory Server 9.5 was released soon after the desktop based version of their Linux distribution. Calculate Directory Server 9.5 is practically an LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) server powered by a modified Gentoo Linux. It allows for the centralized storage of user profiles, applications settings and access rights from a single networked repository.
